DELHI- Indian airlines, presently holding an order book for 1,618 planes, may increase their orders by approximately 380 more aircraft by March next year.
The surge in demand for air travel, both domestically and internationally, is driving this potential expansion, as stated by aviation consultancy firm CAPA India on Friday (Jan 19, 2024).
Indian Airlines Aircraft Order
The anticipated additional orders are anticipated to originate from Air India (AI), which is considering converting some of its existing 370 options into firm orders over the next few months.
Furthermore, other Indian carriers might contribute to this growth with potential additional orders.
In February of the preceding year, when Air India placed an order for 470 planes with Airbus and Boeing, the airline under Tata Group’s management retained an option to order an additional 370 aircraft.
CAPA India highlighted that the current order book for Indian airlines is nearly 1,620 aircraft (excluding orders from Go First (G8) and SpiceJet (SG) and considering Thursday’s Akasa Air [QP] order). It is projected to rise to around 2,000 aircraft by March 2025.
Record Year for India
The total count of 1,618 aircraft excludes Go First due to “uncertainty,” as the airline faced insolvency in May of the previous year.
SpiceJet, having recently secured funding from over 60 investors, has been grappling with financial challenges over the past several quarters.
CAPA India highlighted that in 2023, Indian airlines surpassed the aircraft orders of any other nation.
Additionally, the combined order book for Western aircraft in India stands as the second-largest globally, following the United States.
