Lufthansa Boeing 747 Makes An Emergency Landing in Argentina

ROSARIO- The relatively modest “Islas Malvinas” Airport in Fisherton, situated outside the Argentine city of Rosario, witnessed an unusual event on Tuesday (March 12, 2024) when a Lufthansa (LH) Airlines Boeing 747 touched down there amidst numerous diversions to alternative destinations due to the closure of Buenos Aires’ air terminals caused by heavy rains.

Star Alliance member carriers’s flight DLH510 from Frankfurt, carrying 353 passengers and a crew of 19 bound for Ezeiza, faced a last-minute diversion due to reports of a passenger requiring urgent medical attention.

The presence of a Boeing 747 attracted the interest of local aviation enthusiasts. With only a handful of four-engine passenger jets in operation globally, including the even larger Airbus A380, the US-manufactured Jumbo Jet will forever hold the title of the “Queen of the Skies” following its initial introduction in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Following this and several other minor air travel incidents, Buenos Aires woke up on Wednesday to a situation strikingly reminiscent of Tuesday’s conditions – flight delays and cancellations caused by adverse weather conditions.

Ezeiza International Airport declared a red alert and suspended all operations at 7 am. At the same time, Jorge Newbery Airport in downtown Buenos Aires anticipated implementing additional spacing measures between flights as a precautionary measure. This further reduced the rate of take-offs and landings, exacerbating the complications experienced on Tuesday when both terminals were closed for several hours, and numerous flights were either canceled, delayed, or redirected.

747 Incident

In Jan 2024, An Atlas Air (5Y) Boeing 747 cargo plane had to execute an emergency landing at Miami International Airport (MIA) due to an engine malfunction shortly after takeoff.

In a statement, Atlas Air confirmed that the crew adhered to standard procedures and safely returned to MIA. The airline announced plans to conduct a thorough inspection to ascertain the cause of the incident.

Unverified videos circulating on the social media platform X depicted flames emerging from the aircraft’s left wing during the flight. According to FlightAware data, the aircraft involved was a Boeing 747-8.

According to the airport, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded swiftly, and no injuries were reported.
