Singapore Airlines Daily Flights to Cairns
Singapore Airlines will upgrade its Cairns operations to daily flights from December 2026 using the Boeing 737-8 MAX, a smaller narrow-body aircraft.
While the new schedule increases weekly flights by 75 percent, total weekly seat capacity falls by approximately 11 percent due to the downsizing from the Airbus A350 Medium Haul.
Business Class capacity sees the most significant impact, reducing from 160 seats per week to 70, representing a 56 percent drop in premium cabin availability.
The route has shown persistent signs of overcapacity throughout the year. Cairns appeared in ten of twelve Spontaneous Escapes promotions, often in both Business and Economy Class, indicating challenges in filling the larger A350 Medium Haul aircraft.
The MAX fleet also cruises about 8 percent slower than the A350, leading to longer block times in both travel directions.

The MAX schedule is loaded until 27 March 2027 and is expected to continue beyond this date. The route becomes Singapore Airlines’ second-longest 737-8 MAX service, slightly shorter than the 6-hour-50-minute Busan–Singapore flight.

Historical Overview of the Cairns Route
Singapore Airlines first served Cairns in the late 1990s using Airbus A310 aircraft before discontinuing service.
SilkAir revived the route in 2015 with a triangular Singapore–Cairns–Darwin–Singapore pattern using Boeing 737-800s. Dedicated nonstop services to Cairns and Darwin began in May 2016 and continued until the suspension in March 2020 during the pandemic.
Singapore Airlines resumed Cairns operations in March 2022 with 3 weekly Boeing 737-800 services, later upgraded to four weekly Boeing 737-8 MAX flights.
The Airbus A350 Medium Haul replaced the MAX in March 2024, restoring a full wide-body operation until the upcoming December 2026 fleet shift.
