NAPLES- EasyJet (U2) witnessed a disturbing incident on a flight when a 45-year-old passenger sexually assaulted a woman during a late evening journey. Nicola Cristiano, an Italian national, moved seats to sit next to his victim and repeatedly touched her inappropriately, prompting a rapid police response upon landing.
The victim, travelling alone, alerted the cabin crew after Cristiano attempted to kiss her and force her to touch his exposed crotch. Authorities arrested him at Edinburgh Airport (EDI), and he faced trial at the High Court in Edinburgh last month.

Cristiano’s actions included grabbing the woman by the hand and neck, and attempting to fondle her breast. Witnesses seated nearby confirmed that the assault took place without consent, contradicting Cristiano’s partial admission.
During the trial, it emerged that the woman had consumed wine offered by Cristiano, but all sexual activity was non-consensual.
Police described Cristiano’s deliberate targeting of a lone traveller as “despicable,” highlighting the importance of reporting sexual crimes promptly.
Detective Chief Inspector Steph Garnett emphasized that swift intervention by cabin crew prevented further harm and ensured the victim’s safety.
Sentencing Outcome
On Friday, Judge Alison Stirling sentenced Cristiano to six years in prison, citing the victim’s impact statement detailing long-term emotional trauma.
The judge noted that the assault had left the woman feeling unsafe while travelling and unwilling to go on previously planned trips. She stressed that custody was essential for punishment, public protection, and offender rehabilitation.
Cristiano, who followed proceedings through an Italian interpreter, displayed no reaction during sentencing. He will be deported to Italy upon completion of his sentence and will be subject to indefinite notification requirements.
According to The Times, the court also observed that Cristiano had not fully accepted the guilty verdict despite acknowledging some inappropriate contact.
