ISTANBUL- Singapore Airlines (SIA) diverted its London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) service SQ305 to Istanbul on September 15 after a passenger required medical assistance during the flight.
Singapore Airlines (SIA) said the Airbus A350-900 was carrying 197 passengers and 16 crew members when the aircraft landed at Istanbul Airport (IST). The affected passenger was taken to hospital after landing.

Singapore Airlines Flight SQ305 Diverted to Istanbul
Singapore Airlines flight SQ305 departed London Heathrow Airport at 9:38 a.m. local time on September 15, bound for Singapore. The flight was scheduled to operate nonstop, with the journey normally taking about 13 hours.
During the flight, the crew diverted the aircraft to Istanbul Airport after a passenger experienced a medical situation that required assistance on the ground. Singapore Airlines confirmed the diversion in response to queries from The Straits Times on September 17.
The airline did not disclose the nature of the medical situation. It said the details could not be provided because of passenger confidentiality.
Flight tracking data from FlightAware showed that SQ305 was flying over northeastern Turkey when the diversion took place. The aircraft subsequently headed toward Istanbul in northwestern Turkey.
The Airbus A350-900 landed at Istanbul Airport at 5:07 p.m. local time on September 15.

Passenger Taken to Hospital After Landing
Medical services were waiting for the aircraft when it arrived at Istanbul Airport. The passenger requiring medical assistance was met by medical personnel and taken to hospital immediately, according to Singapore Airlines.
The airline did not provide further details about the passenger’s condition or the treatment provided. Such information is generally subject to passenger privacy and medical confidentiality.
The diversion allowed the passenger to receive medical attention without continuing the long-haul journey to Singapore.

Crew Duty Limits Delayed the Singapore Departure
The diversion also affected the onward operation of the flight because the crew would have exceeded their regulatory flight time limits.
As a result, the aircraft did not continue to Singapore on September 15. Singapore Airlines rescheduled the service to depart Istanbul on September 16 at 12:10 p.m. local time.
The flight was renumbered from SQ305 to SQ9391 for the Istanbul to Singapore sector.
SQ9391 eventually departed Istanbul at 12:10 p.m. local time on September 16 and arrived at Singapore Changi Airport at 3:33 a.m. local time on September 17.
This meant passengers experienced a significant delay compared with the original nonstop itinerary from London to Singapore.

Singapore Airlines Arranged Passenger Assistance
Singapore Airlines said it provided necessary assistance to passengers affected by the diversion and rescheduling.
The airline arranged hotel accommodation for passengers who needed to remain in Istanbul and helped rebook passengers onto alternative flights where required.
The arrangements were made while the airline dealt with the crew duty restrictions and prepared for the onward journey to Singapore.
Singapore Airlines also apologised to passengers for the inconvenience caused by the diversion.

Airbus A350-900 Operated the Flight
SQ305 was operated by an Airbus A350-900, a widebody aircraft used by Singapore Airlines on several long-haul international routes.
The aircraft had 197 passengers and 16 crew members on board at the time of the diversion.
The A350-900 is designed for long-distance operations and is a major part of Singapore Airlines’ widebody fleet. Its range allows the airline to operate nonstop services between Europe and Singapore.

London to Singapore Route
The London to Singapore route is one of Singapore Airlines’ established long-haul markets. The airline operates services between the United Kingdom and Singapore, connecting passengers with the airline’s wider network through Changi Airport.
A normal nonstop flight between London and Singapore takes approximately 13 hours, according to Singapore Airlines.
The SQ305 diversion added an intermediate stop in Istanbul and required an overnight delay before the aircraft could continue its journey.
The incident also demonstrates how a medical diversion on a long-haul flight can affect passengers beyond the individual requiring treatment. Once the aircraft lands away from its planned destination, crew duty restrictions, passenger accommodation and onward travel arrangements can all influence the timing of the remaining journey.

Safety Remained the Priority
Singapore Airlines said the safety of passengers and crew remains its top priority.
Medical diversions are operational decisions made when a passenger’s condition requires attention that cannot be adequately provided while the aircraft remains in flight. The decision can result in an unplanned landing and subsequent changes to the aircraft’s schedule.
In this case, the aircraft landed in Istanbul, medical services assisted the affected passenger, and Singapore Airlines arranged accommodation and alternative travel for passengers affected by the disruption.
The flight later continued to Singapore under the new flight number SQ9391, arriving at Changi Airport early on September 17.
