DUBAI, UAE— Dubai International Airport (DXB) has suspended services operated by Iranian airlines, including Iran Air (IR), following new United States sanctions targeting the country’s aviation sector.
The decision affects air links between the United Arab Emirates and Iran, where Dubai has long served as an important destination for Iranian travelers and businesses.
The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) announced the suspension on Thursday, September 24, 2026, citing restrictions imposed by Washington on Iranian airlines using airports around the world.
The move has also raised concerns about reciprocal aviation measures from Tehran, including reported restrictions on UAE-registered aircraft operating through Iranian airspace.
UAE Suspends Iranian Flights
The GCAA confirmed that flights operated by Iranian airlines to and from the UAE would remain suspended until further notice.
The authority said the decision followed the United States’ ban on Iranian carriers using airports in various countries, while promising to provide updates about the future of air services between the two countries.
The latest restrictions follow a broader US campaign against Iran’s aviation industry. Washington has warned that airports, fuel suppliers, ground-service providers, and other companies that continue supporting sanctioned Iranian airlines could face secondary sanctions.
These measures create significant challenges for Iranian carriers because international aviation depends on access to fuel, maintenance, handling services, airport facilities, and financial networks.
The threat of losing access to the US dollar system could also discourage foreign businesses from maintaining commercial relationships with affected airlines.
US Sanctions Pressure Aviation
The UAE’s decision affects a strategically important aviation connection. Dubai has historically attracted Iranian passengers because of its geographic proximity, commercial links, and large Iranian expatriate community, making the suspension relevant to both travelers and airlines.

Iran Restricts UAE Airspace
Iran has reportedly responded by restricting access to its airspace for UAE-registered aircraft, including aircraft operated by Emirates (EK), Etihad Airways (EY), and flydubai (FZ).
If implemented, the measure could affect flight planning and increase journey times on routes that previously crossed Iranian airspace.
However, the effect on the UAE’s major airlines may be limited because Emirates and Etihad had already rerouted several services around Iran following the military escalation in the region earlier this year.
Flights to destinations such as Baku, Moscow, and St. Petersburg had been operating on alternative routes, PYOK reported.
Flydubai, however, had recently resumed using Iranian airspace on selected services to Russia to reduce flight times.
A renewed restriction would force the airline to restore longer routes, potentially increasing fuel consumption and operational costs.
