MELBOURNE- Today (March 1, 2024) marks the commencement of the first commercial flights for QantasLink’s (QF) two newly acquired Airbus A220 aircraft, marking the dawn of a new era in Australian domestic and regional travel.
In the ongoing domestic fleet renewal program of the Qantas Group, the airline has received the initial pair of 29 A220 jet aircraft. These new additions will gradually replace the longstanding Boeing 717 fleet.
Qantas A220 Commercial Flights
The inaugural flight, QF1266, from Melbourne (MEL) to Canberra (CBR) took off this morning. Additionally, the A220 will begin serving selected flights on the Melbourne-Brisbane (BNE) route today.
Distinguished by its superior fuel efficiency compared to earlier models, the A220 boasts an ultra-modern cabin design featuring spacious interiors, large windows, overhead lockers, specially crafted seats, and an enhanced sense of space. These features collectively contribute to a more comfortable flight experience for passengers.
With a range nearly double that of the 717s, the A220 can connect any two points within Australia and reach multiple international destinations, opening up new possibilities for future routes.
CEO Remarks
Rachel Yangoyan, the CEO of QantasLink, highlighted the transformative impact of the A220 on domestic travel, stating that these next-generation aircraft will significantly enhance the travel experience across the network.
She expressed excitement about the commencement of commercial flights, emphasizing the A220’s superior comfort, spacious interiors, and the inclusion of fast and complimentary Wi-Fi for all passengers.
Yangoyan also underscored the aircraft’s quieter operation and its environmental benefits, with up to a 25% reduction in carbon emissions—an essential aspect as the airline strives to achieve its net-zero target.
Anticipating the enthusiasm of both customers and QantasLink teams, she noted a surge in bookings on the identified A220 routes, demonstrating the strong desire of passengers to be among the first to experience the new aircraft.
Third A220 Update
The third A220 is presently in the production phase at Airbus’ Mirabel facility in Canada, with an expected delivery date in June. Furthermore, an additional four A220s are slated for delivery by mid-2025.
As the fleet expands, the A220 will be introduced on additional existing routes, such as Melbourne-Hobart starting in July, Melbourne-Coffs Harbour in October, and Melbourne-Launceston in November.
Key attributes of the A220 experience encompass:
- Accommodating 137 passengers across two cabins, featuring 10 Business seats in a 2-2 configuration and 127 Economy seats in a 2-3 configuration.
- Boasting the most extensive windows among single-aisle aircraft and a cabin designed to provide a heightened sense of space.
- It offers swift, complimentary Wi-Fi for connectivity and an upgraded Qantas Entertainment App that enables content streaming to personal devices.
- Equipped with an integrated personal device holder and USB A and C charging points in both Economy and Business, supplemented by an additional wireless charging pad in the Business class.
- Presenting a more comfortable Economy seat with enhanced padding compared to the 717.
- Providing approximately 20% more overhead locker space for all passengers.
- Demonstrating a noise footprint reduction of up to 50% and a 25% decrease in carbon emissions.
