TEL AVIV- Israel has approved a major defense procurement plan to acquire advanced fighter jets from Lockheed Martin and Boeing, signaling a significant expansion of its air combat capabilities amid ongoing tensions with Iran.

The decision comes during a prolonged conflict involving coordinated military operations and stalled diplomatic efforts over regional security and nuclear concerns.

The Israeli government confirmed that it will move forward with the purchase of two new combat squadrons, including the fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II and the upgraded F-15I.

The program forms part of a broader long-term military modernization plan valued at approximately 350 billion shekels, aimed at reinforcing operational readiness over the next decade.

The newly approved deal includes a fourth squadron of F-35 aircraft and a second squadron of F-15IA jets. These platforms will enhance Israel’s ability to conduct both stealth operations and long-range strike missions.

Officials stated that the procurement aligns with evolving threat perceptions and the need for sustained aerial dominance.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that the acquisition strengthens Israel’s air superiority, citing recent military operations as proof of the air force’s reach and effectiveness.

He reiterated that Israeli pilots maintain the capability to operate across extended ranges, including potential missions over Iran if required.

Israel’s Strategic Air Power

Defense officials described the fighter jet acquisition as a cornerstone of Israel’s long-term force development strategy.

The aircraft will integrate advanced avionics, network-centric warfare systems, and next-generation combat technologies. These capabilities are expected to improve coordination across air, land, sea, space, and cyber domains.

Amir Baram, Director General of the Defense Ministry, highlighted the importance of acting early to secure future military advantages, ET flagged.

Defense Minister Israel Katz added that lessons from the ongoing war have accelerated efforts to upgrade military capabilities.
