ULWE— Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) has marked a major milestone in its developing cargo operations after welcoming its first Boeing 747 freighter on August 24. National Airlines (N8) operated the Boeing 747-400F, registered N569CA, on a flight from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN), making it the largest aircraft to land at the new airport since operations began.
The iconic “Queen of the Skies” received a ceremonial water cannon salute after touching down in the early hours of Monday. The arrival adds another important aircraft category to NMIA’s expanding freighter network and strengthens its position as a potential cargo gateway for western India.
First B747 Freighter Makes History
The National Airlines Boeing 747-400F arrived from Frankfurt-Hahn, an established European cargo hub, during a rapid expansion of freighter activity at NMIA.
National Airlines currently operates nine Boeing 747 freighters, with the type supporting large-volume cargo, humanitarian missions and specialised charter operations. The inaugural operation also exposed some of the challenges involved in scaling cargo infrastructure at a new airport.
Reports indicated that offloading faced technical difficulties involving ground support equipment, while the resulting delays contributed to Flight Duty Time Limitation restrictions for the crew.
As a result, some pallets that had arrived on the flight were returned as stacked cargo when the aircraft departed. Such operational issues can occur when handlers and airport systems adapt to larger aircraft and more complex freighter movements.
NMIA Cargo Growth Gains Momentum
The 747 arrival follows a rapid progression in NMIA’s cargo capabilities. IndiGo CarGo’s Airbus A321P2F began the airport’s narrowbody freighter activity on August 1, while Hong Kong Air Cargo introduced dedicated widebody freighter operations on August 16.
Hong Kong Air Cargo became the first international carrier to operate a dedicated freighter service at NMIA, using Airbus A330 freighters on three weekly flights between Hong Kong and Navi Mumbai.
Afcom Cargo also began linking NMIA with Dubai World Central (DWC) in August, adding another international cargo connection.
This progression from narrowbody freighters to A330 widebodies and now a Boeing 747 highlights the speed at which NMIA is developing its cargo profile.
The airport has therefore moved quickly from handling initial freight movements to accommodating one of the largest commercial freighter aircraft in service.
Mumbai Cargo Shift Gains Momentum
NMIA’s cargo expansion comes as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) prepares for major airside infrastructure work.
Dedicated freighter operations at Mumbai’s primary airport are scheduled to be suspended from August 2026 through May 2027 while the freighter apron and associated infrastructure undergo reconstruction, The Stat Trade Times flagged.
The planned disruption is accelerating interest in NMIA as an alternative cargo gateway for the Mumbai region.
The new airport has already attracted international freighter activity, with Hong Kong Air Cargo confirming that its three-weekly service will connect Navi Mumbai with Hong Kong.
With the arrival of National Airlines’ 747-400F, NMIA has demonstrated that its cargo operation can accommodate a significantly larger freighter type.
The milestone also places greater attention on the airport’s ability to strengthen ground handling, cargo processing, and logistics infrastructure as more operators shift freight activity toward Navi Mumbai.
