DUBAI- Adelaide Airport (ADL) welcomed a major milestone this week as the first long-range Airbus A350-900 aircraft operated by Emirates Airline (EK) touched down on its scheduled service from Dubai (DXB).
The arrival marks the official replacement of the Boeing 777-200LR on the daily EK440/441 route and introduces a refreshed onboard experience for South Australian travelers. The aircraft, registered A6-EXM, is the first A350-900ULR in Emirates’ fleet capable of operating extended missions such as the Dubai–Adelaide sector.
Emirates A350 to Adelaide
The new A350 arrival also signals the debut of Emirates’ updated Premium Economy cabin in Adelaide. Emirates said the aircraft’s deployment reflects Adelaide’s growing importance within its international network and highlights the route’s strong performance since its relaunch last year.
Barry Brown, the divisional vice president for Australasia, noted that this milestone completes the rollout of Premium Economy across all five Emirates gateways in Australia.
The airline confirmed that while it has accepted multiple A350 deliveries over the past year, this is the first long-range configuration specifically capable of flying the non-stop Dubai–Adelaide distance.
The decision to assign the ULR variant to Adelaide underscores the route’s strategic value.
With this introduction, Adelaide becomes the first city in Emirates’ global network to receive the long-range variant, reinforcing the carrier’s strategic commitment to the South Australian market.
Benefit for South Australia
Adelaide Airport officials welcomed the aircraft, calling it a major operational upgrade. Managing director Brenton Cox said the A350’s combination of range and size is ideally matched to South Australia’s travel demand profile.
He added that the aircraft will offer enhanced comfort while supporting further market development.
Local officials echoed that sentiment, with State Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison describing the A350’s arrival as a significant development for tourism.
She said it strengthens Adelaide’s presence in global markets and enhances the attractiveness of the non-stop service. According to state data, Emirates’ daily flights contribute more than $62 million annually to South Australia’s tourism economy.
Route Strengthening
Emirates reinstated the Dubai–Adelaide service in October after a four-year suspension that began in March 2020.
Since returning, the route has shown robust performance, contributing to higher visitor numbers and sustained travel demand. The introduction of the A350-900ULR is expected to support further growth by offering additional efficiency and improved cabin comfort.
The deployment also reflects Emirates’ broader long-term investment in its Australian network.
With Adelaide now receiving the A350, the airline strengthens its position across the continent, ensuring consistent product standards across its major gateways.
